Liverpool were in a grovelling mood yesterday as they were suddenly found out to be guilty of tapping up another club’s player, namely our Virgil van Dijk. They released a statement earlier this afternoon apologising and refraining from pursuing any contact or interest with the player.
It seems a damage limitation exercise in view of their previous infringements this year with an academy player and family. With Southampton having registered their complaint with the League its hard to see that Liverpool won’t escape with some form of punishment, given their previous crime and persistent pursuit of Southampton players.
If they have genuinely screwed up then they will have to be an internal investigation and Klopp will have sweaty palms for the next week or so pending a response from the league.
Van Dijk on the other hand will have to re-evaluate his choices with Liverpool being his preferred route. Conté and Pep will be strolling up to the doors of St Mary’s soon doing everything above board and offering wage packets extraordinaire.
However, Southampton are sure to be slapping on a target price in excess of £50m, with £75m being mentioned to keep potential suitors away. Does Van Dijk become interested or does he wait it out now to see who he will be managed by in the coming year. With the likes of Thomas Tuchel being touted it may suit him to wait it out, certainly until the new manager is named. The style of football will suit him and he could possibly get his Champions League football without a move or certainly a £90m move next summer to Real or Barcelona!
